History of Ranthambore National Park

 

Ranthambore National Park got its name from the ancient fort still standing in the middle of the woods. Prior to independence, Ranthambore served as the Hunting Reserve of the Maharajas of Jaipur till 1970.

 

1970 Eventful year as hunting got banned

 

1955 - Named as Sawai Madhopur Wildlife Sanctuary

 

1973 -Ranthambore was chosen as one among the nine tiger reserves when Project Tiger was launched on April 1,1973

 

1981 - Eventful year as Ranthambore was accorded the status of National Park.

 

1981-1990/91 - Golden period of Ranthambore .Enormous increase in the population of tigers under Project Tiger .Arrival of new generation of tigers.

 

1989 - Tiger population jumped from 14 to 44 under Project Tiger

 

1992 - The year known for the second tiger crisis as the tiger population declined to a greater extent.Census revealed tigers were poached for bones and were hunted for skins.

 

2002/03 - Tiger population was again up because of strict protection given after the census revelation of 1991-92.

 

2005 - Decrease in tiger population from 47 to 26 .Census revealed 21 tigers were missing .The phase of Third Tiger Crisis began.
